ART OF ANCIENT GREECE
Ancient Greece Art has been influenced on many culture over history. The art of ancient Greece is usually divided into four periods. The first being the Geometric (Dark ages) , 1000 BC. Although in reality very little is known about this time period as it was the Greek Dark Ages.
The period of 7th century BC. witnessed the slow development of the Archaic style, famous for the black figure style of vase poetry.
The onset of the Persian wars (480 BC to 448 BC), is the era of the Classical period, where the Greece saw revolution of Greek statuary, usually associated with the introduction of democracy and the end of aristocratic culture.
The transition from Classical to Hellenistic period occurred during 4th century BC. Under Alexander the Great(336 BC to 323 BC) Greek culture spreed as far as India, thus Greek art became more diverse.
FASHION AND CLOTHING
Clothing in ancient Greece was loose fitting and un-stitched. Both men and women typically wore tunics, women tunics were generally ankle length, whereas men’s were shorter. The common people of Greece usually wore clothes of plain color white being the most common. Those with financial resources dyed their clothing. During winter a heavy wool cloak was worn for warmth. Clothing was made by the ladies usually the mother would make the clothes with the help from her daughter or slaves. The main cloth used was wool, sometimes flax was also used to make clothing. The Greeks generally wore sandals when outdoor inside there homes they went barefoot. But the common people usually went barefoot all the time. Jewelry was very popular in ancient Greece, men and women both wore jewelry but by the 4th century it appears that the trend had ended.
Hairstyle in ancient Greece also changed overtime, men normally wore their hair short and grew beards. During Hellenistic era,beard went out of style. Greek women had long hair, they would curl and braid their hair or put it up like a bun. slave women would wear their hair short.
Greek women loved makeup. the rich women stayed indoor most of the time, pale skin was fashionable, therefore they applied lead which was very toxic to there faces to lighten their complexion.
